Top picnic recipes for National Picnic Week

BY
The perfect picnic

17th – 25th June 2023 is National Picnic Week!

Time to grab your picnic blankets and baskets and get outdoors for a good old-fashioned picnic. Picnicking is one of the UK’s most enjoyable summer traditions and is a great way of taking advantage of any open spaces in your local area over the warmer months of the year.

We have chosen some delicious picnic recipes and put together some excellent tips for you to pack a proper perfect picnic basket – now that is a mouthful!

  • Freeze bottled water to work as icepacks. Once melted, you have a chilled drink! Make sure to steer clear of using glass bottles as they can shatter in the freezer.
  • Keep dressings separate to avoid any soggy salads. We like to use a clean jam jar for this.
  • Make sure to pack a bag or two to carry home your rubbish, preserving scenic picnic spots the way they should be!
  • Napkins and hand wipes are a must, as well as sun cream to protect you from the glorious sunshine (even on an overcast day the sun’s rays can catch you out).
  • Pack foods that are easy to eat with your hands, the less messy the better, trust us on this one!

Fingers crossed that our famous British weather doesn’t spoil things!

It’s essential to pick a scenic setting for your picnic spot and there are so many fantastic places to discover. Personally, I think the best picnic spots have a wonderful view, or they’re close to something tranquil and lovely such as a babbling brook or a winding river. Ponder places within a walk or a short drive that may reveal watery wonders or glorious vistas (ideally with a bench or picnic table) and plan your trip. Visit National Picnic Week to find out more about picnicking and vote for your favourite picnic spot!

As important as the setting of your picnic is the food! And of course, it wouldn’t be a Dairy Diary blog without some gorgeous recipes. So here are some of our favourite picnic recipes and snacks.
