The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by cancer.
Founded in 1999, the charity is the legacy of BBC broadcaster Helen Rollason
Helen Rollason was a British sports journalist and television presenter who in 1990 became the first female presenter of the BBC's sports programme Grandstand. She was also a regular presenter of Sport on Friday and of the children's programme Newsround during the 1980s. In 1997 Helen was diagnosed with cancer of the colon which spread to her liver and later to her lungs. She was initially given three months to live but she continued to fight the disease until 1999. During this time she helped raise over £5 million for charity. Helen died on August 9th 1999 at the age of 43 and the Helen Rollason Cancer charity was established in her name the same year.
Helen believed that having a good quality of life while coping with cancer is the most important gift that a sick person can receive and that it should be available to everyone. It is this vision that inspires the work of the charity.
The charity supports men and women with all types of cancer at all stages – whether newly diagnosed or longer-term, throughout treatment and after treatment is completed. Their centres offer a range of complementary therapies to patients in an environment of peace and tranquillity, including counselling, reflexology, aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage and support groups.
The aim of the Helen Rollason Charity is to provide a safe space where you can be yourself and do not have to put on a brave face. A place where you can have enjoyable, relaxing and calming treatments in the knowledge that you are not alone.
Providing support for cancer patients’ emotional well-being alongside their medical treatment continues to be at the core of the charity’s mission.
